Clinical Study of the Ankle Fracture


Abstract
One hundred and thirty eight cases of the ankle fracture have been treated and managed in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Kyungpook University Hospital during the period from January, 1968 to December, 1976. One hundred and thirty eight patients were analyzed clinically according to Lauge-Hansen .classification and results obtained were as follow.
1. Automobile accident was the most frequent cause of the ankle fractures (61. 6%)2. In classification of our materials according to Lauge-Hansen, the type of supination-adduction is most common type in this series.
3. The average duration of cast immobilization is 10 weeks after closed reduction and 8.1 weeks after open reduction.
4. Good clinical results were obtained in 59.6% of open reduction cases and 69.5% of closed reduction cases; this might be due to the degree of initial injury which is more severe in the open reduction cases.
